1971-1980
In 1972 The name was changed from United Fund to United Way of Jonesboro. Martha Hannah served as Interim Director until Gene Beck was hired as full-time Director.
In 1973 the name was changed to United Way of Greater Jonesboro. The United Way gave Salvation Army and Red Cross $10,000 to help tornado victims. A disaster relief fund was set up. USO dropped as an agency.
SCAN became an agency in 1976. The Corporate Award was initiated for firms with 50 or more employees for the highest per capita giving. (E.I. Dupont won the award for 11 consecutive years. CWL has won it each year since then.)
Step Ahead was admitted as an agency in 1977. In 1978 John T. Gray became and agency and Jr. Auxiliary withdrew. Alternative School and Hospice became agencies in 1979. Jack Deacon was recognized for 25 years of continuous service. Helpline and PACES became members in 1980. |
