1981-1990
Beth Walker became Executive Director in 1982. In 1983 Hospice withdrew as a member agency and dissolved the organization. United Way helped the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas get started. The Loaned Executive Program was started this same year.
Sam and Marilyn Hummelstein were the first campaign co-chairs in 1984. “By the Way” newsletter was printed. Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas was admitted as an agency. The first FEMA (Federal Emergency and Management Agency) funds were received for emergency assistance. The Pillars Club was formed with 25 charter members. Jack Deacon was the first chairman.
In 1985 Women’s Recovery Center was admitted as the 16th agency. Fun Day was held at ASU with over 3,000 attending. The United Way moved to 907 Union.
In 1986 June Morse was hired as Executive Director. Family Violence Task Force was granted start up funds and was given an office at the United Way.
United Way of America was 100 years old in 1987. There was a first class stamp issued for the celebration and United Way Pillars received the first day issue of the stamp. The New Hires Program was begun.
In 1988 Marilyn Hummelstein served as the first female president of the board. A community- wide needs assessment was conducted by the United Way, East School and Jr. Auxiliary. Crowley’s Ridge Cross Trainers conducted a 5K run for the United Way. Kick-Off was a fair at the YMCA. Three levels of recognizing Pillars were established.
NEA Council on Family Violence became the 17th agency in 1989. A one-time grant was given to the ASU Wellness Center to help get the program started. Start-up funds were also given to the CRDC Adolescent Substance Abuse Program.
In 1990 Martha (Hannah) Secrease retired after 21 years of service. John T. Gray and Cottage of Hope merged to become the NEA Comprehensive Learning Centers (now called The Learning Center). A Volunteer Appreciation Picnic was held for the community to celebrate National Volunteer Week. Over 300 people attended the event at Earl Bell Community Center. United Way Foundation was established. Happiness Is Caring and Sharing Program was started in area fourth grade classes. |
